چکیده

Under certain conditions, high temperature electrons di€using across the separatrix near the midplane can propagate to the divertor without collision and produce a high energy tail in the electron distribution function near the separatrix. We evaluate a kinetic criterion along the ®eld using measurements from divertor Thomson scattering and compare temperature measurements from target plate Langmuir probes to estimate the magnitude of the high energy tail. A Fokker±Planck kinetic model [O. Batishchev, Phys. Plasmas 4 (1998) 1672], which includes electron±electron, electronion, electron-neutral, and charge exchange interactions is used to estimate the size of the high energy tail. For the cases considered, we found less than 1% of non-thermal particles near the target plate at typical densities and power levels for the DIII-D scrape-o€ layer plasma. ELMs violate our kinetic criterion. Ó 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Annual target: Predicting the magnitude and scaling of the divertor heat load width in magnetically confined burning plasmas is a high priority for the fusion program and ITER. One of the key unresolved physics issues is what sets the heat flux width at the entrance to the divertor region. Porous plug gas injection systems for studies of hydrocarbon dissociation and transport in the DIII-D tokamak.

A probe has been designed, constructed, and successfully used to inject methane into the DIII-D lower divertor in a manner imitating natural release by chemical erosion. This porous plug injector (PPI) probe consists of a self-contained gas reservoir with an integrated pressure gauge and a 3 cm diameter porous surface through which gas is injected into the lower divertor of the tokamak. The pro...

Role of Transport and MHD Stability in Simulations of H-mode Pedestal Development in ELMy Plasmas

This study addresses the development of a scaling of the H-mode pedestal in tokamak plasmas with type I ELMs. In particular, the scaling studies carried out illustrate the dependence of the pedestal properties and the resulting divertor heat load width as a function of plasma elongation and plasma current. H-mode pedestal profiles for DIII-D and Alcator C-Mod tokamaks are considered: DIII-D for...
